CHARLES L. CHATMON

 

As an author, poet and freelance writer, Charles L. Chatmon has been a fresh voice in the world of literature for years. His works of poetry captured in his books The Depths of My Soul and The Voices of South Central is written with a “stark sensitivity and style”. As a freelance writer, Charles has contributed pieces for the California Crusader News, L.A. Wave Newspaper, and the L.A. Watts Times. His articles have also appeared in Consciousness Magazine, Empire Beat Magazine, and college newspapers. He was a sports editor for his high school newspaper and a sports columnist for one of his college newspapers.

 

Aside from his written work, Charles has also spent time helping to develop events such as the Los Angeles Black Book Expo, where he served as its executive director. He has also helped to create the Authors Pavilion for the first annual Leimert Park Book Fair, the Literary Village for the African Marketplace and the Literacy Awareness program for Community Day in Los Angeles. For several years, he was a co-host for Mixed Matters for North Bay Media Review and is the creator of Authors N Focus. Charles is also the co-owner of Chatmon’s Books. Charles continues to teach writing workshops in places as the African American Museum and Library at Oakland and the AC Bilbrew Library in Los Angeles. He is a co-founder of the California Writers Collective.

 

 

Before devoting more time to his writing, Charles worked as a teacher’s aide for the Los Angeles Unified School District and teacher for the Compton Unified School District. While at Compton, he helped to implement and taught a writing lab and English classes for his middle school students, even coaching his school’s baseball team for one year. Charles has also been involved in organizations such as the Southside then Weingart YMCA in South Los Angeles where he helped to develop their Y-Winners sports programs and served as a youth counselor for their camp programs.

Charles L. Chatmon holds a Bachelor of English degree from California State University, Los Angeles.
